We react, we compete, we perform, we resent, we burn out. The Stoics would find this unsurprising. What they would find surprising is our failure to notice it.
Marcus Aurelius governed an empire. Seneca advised a tyrant. Epictetus was a slave who became a teacher. Each of them thought carefully about what it means to work well — not merely productively, but philosophically. Their conclusions are more useful than anything produced by the modern productivity industry, because they address not the mechanics of output but the character of the worker.
